FAQ

What are the Accommodations Like?

We’re glad you asked! Our camp takes place at a modern, well-maintained facility designed for comfort and community. The cabins are air-conditioned and equipped with indoor plumbing, including private showers. Each cabin has two bunk rooms where campers are assigned based on age, with counselors staying in each room to provide support and supervision.

Beyond the cabins, our dining hall is also air-conditioned—perfect for enjoying meals prepared by our amazing kitchen staff. Great food, great company, and a cozy place to rest after a full day of fun—what more could you ask for?

Is Camp Sunflower a Church Camp?

Great question! While Camp Sunflower is supported by a variety of community organizations—including some open and affirming faith communities—it is not a religious camp. We hold our camp at a site that is managed by a church, but the location is used by many different groups throughout the year, both religious and secular.

Camp Sunflower itself has no religious affiliation. Our programming and staff are chosen independently of any religious considerations, and there are no religious components in our camp activities. We welcome and celebrate campers of all faiths, spiritual backgrounds, and beliefs. Come as you are—we’re here to create a joyful and empowering experience for everyone!

What are the Backgrounds of Your Staff?

That’s a great question! Our staff members are carefully selected for their experience working with LGBTQ+ youth and their dedication to creating an affirming, welcoming environment. Each staff member undergoes a thorough background check and brings valuable expertise from their 'regular' careers—many are teachers, community organizers, LGBTQ+ advocates, nurses, and more.

Our camp director has years of experience running camps, including 12+ years leading residential camps specifically for LGBTQ+ teenagers. Together, our team is diverse in personality, identity, and skills, but we all share one mission: to create a fun, empowering, and inclusive space where campers can explore their identities, build community, and have an unforgettable experience at Camp Sunflower!

How Much Does Camp Cost?

We believe every LGBTQ+ youth should have the chance to experience Camp Sunflower, no matter their financial situation. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we’re able to cover much of the cost of camp.

We ask those who can contribute a camp fee to do so, but full and partial scholarships are available to anyone who needs them—no camper will ever be turned away due to an inability to pay. If cost is a concern, simply register, and we’ll work with you to ensure finances are never a barrier to attending.

I want to come to Camp Sunflower, but I am nervous about new people and places.
Is Camp Sunflower a place for me?

This is one of the most common questions we get from first-time campers, and you’re not alone in feeling this way! Going to a new place—especially overnight—can feel intimidating, and many LGBTQ+ youth have had mixed experiences in other camp or social settings.

First, rest assured that the biggest animal you’ll see at camp is Shaggy—our trusty lifeguard, campfire builder, and all-around gear hauler. As for the other fears? They tend to fade within the first few hours, as campers quickly realize that Camp Sunflower is a place where everyone is encouraged to come as they are. Here, we celebrate both what we share and what makes each of us unique.

Our counselors and fellow campers are eager to welcome you, get to know you, and make you feel included. We also have a mental health professional on staff, always available to provide extra support. If it helps, we can connect you with returning campers via social media before camp, so you’ll already know some friendly faces when you arrive.

Still have questions? You’re always welcome to call or email Finn, the camp director—we want you to feel comfortable and excited about your time at Camp Sunflower!
